How Do You Holiday? 1

Merry Christmas!

I saw this survey posted on Brandie Is a Book Junkie and thought it looked like fun for today’s post.  The original post is from Lindsey’s Library.

silver bellFavorite Christmas song(s): My favorite song is “Carol of the Bells” but I also really love “Silver Bells” and “Where Are You Christmas”

Favorite Christmas movie(s): Admittedly, I am not a huge fan of Christmas movies.   I do love “The Family Stone”, “Christmas with the Kranks” and the first “Santa Clause”  -maybe I just like Tim Allen?  As far as older movies, I love the old (lol) Dudley Moore Santa Clause move from ’85.

rudolphRudolph, Frosty, the Grinch or Charlie Brown?: Oooh Tough call!  Okay so I love parts of all of these!  I think the old animated Grinch comes out on top though with Rudolph in a close second.  Honestly, I hate Charlie Brown.

Best and/or most memorable Christmas gift you ever received: Okay if we are talking Santa gifts from childhood I think it had to have been a Barbie house (I was around 5).  It was all put together and set up just perfect when I came down the hallway.  My poor parents!!  In second place was a teddy bear when I was around 10.  I was old enough to know Santa wasn’t real but still wanted to believe.  I convinced my parents to let me sleep under the tree one night.  I woke up at some point in the middle of the night and a brown teddy bear wearing glow in the dark PJ’s had been tucked into my sleeping bag next to me.  I will always remember that feeling of possibility.

Real tree or artificial tree?: These days it’s none.   I have four cats – high energy and curious cats.  This year I did brave a foot high table top tree and it has fared well.  I prefer real trees hands down but as an adult I see the convenience of an artificial, pre-lit tree.

What tops your tree? Star? Angel? Bow?: The tiny tree has a bow.  When I had a big tree it always had a star.  My mom always put an angel on our tree when I was little.  Except for the years my dad won the debate and we had this horribly tacky multi colored shiny 70’s star thing.  It was truly ugly but as a kid I loved it!

Do you send out Christmas cards? Do you go photo card or traditional?: I do send cards.  The past two years I’ve decked out the sassy cats for a photo shoot – torturing them completely.  In years past I’ve sent store bought cards and I’ve also sent hand made cards.  The hand made cards only lasted a year or two because they are so much work!!

When did you stop believing in Santa?: Sometime around 3rd or 4th grade, 8 or 9 years old.  I think not believing in Santa is a slow process that doesn’t usually happen in just one year.

Do you have any special Christmastime traditions?: It changes some.  When I decorated a tree, I would always play the Kenney G Christmas album.  My mom used to play it and it always felt like the holidays to listen to it and decorate.  Sometimes the hubby and I go to a movie on Christmas Eve and some years we go to a party with some family.

Do you have a favorite type of decoration — snowmen, trees, Christmas village, etc.?: I snowmanlove snowmen!  They are not terribly Christmas or holiday but I just love them.

Do you have any sentimental decorations or ornaments?: Not really.  There are some ornaments that are sort of special for one reason or another.  None of them have been put up in years because I don’t want them broken!!

White lights or colored lights? Big old-fashioned lights or mini lights?: White mini lights on the tree now but I used to love colored lights.  I like the smaller lights.

When do you start decorating for Christmas?: I think Christmas decorations should be outlawed before Thanksgiving!!  I don’t decorate much myself but honestly seeing stuff up makes me nuts until at least early December.  I think two weeks of Christmas is plenty.

Favorite Christmas treat: I’m just happy that pumpkin season is over by the time the Christmas goodies roll out!  I think the thing I look forward to the most is the old fashioned Fantasy Fudge we make and my aunts home made Chex Mix.  I could eat both all day!

Do you like sugar cookies? Gingerbread cookies?: Nope, not really! I really have no love for gingerbread at all.  I’ll eat a sugar cookie on occasion but they are not my favorite either.  I’m an oatmeal raisin girl or a snicker doodle will do in a pinch.

Do you have cocoa or hot chocolate? Do you like your warm chocolate-y beverage with marshmallows?: My family says hot chocolate.  I LOVE hot chocolate.  Plain or with peppermint or cinnamon I’m an equal opportunity sipper.  And who has hot chocolate with out marshmallows!?

What do you eat at your Christmas feast?: My mom makes Christmas Dinner and it changes year to year.  As a kid we always had the full out ham and turkey dinner with all the traditional trimmings.  In the past several years we’ve all decided we don’t like the Thanksgiving repeat. We’ve had crabcakes, pasta and pork loin in years past.  This year is appetizer year!  We are having a baked potato bar and all kinds of random appetizers and deserts.

Do you open any presents on Christmas Eve or do you wait until Christmas morning?: When I was a kid we always had close friends over and we would do our exchange on Christmas Eve.  All other presents are opened Christmas Day.

Favorite Christmas-y secent:?
For me, nothing is more Christmas than the smell of a fresh fir tree.  Topping that I gravitate to appley cinnamoney and orangy things.

If you could ask Santa for any gift this year — and know that he’d bring it — what would it be?: This is always a toughie.  We’d all want a million dollars, a big house, a fancy new car.  If I was going to ask for something actually attainable it would probably be a vacation.  I’d love a trip that the hubby didn’t have to work to pay for – so I suppose my gift is really for him.  Second place would be a private concert with Kenny Chesney – I love him!!!!
