Honey, I’m Home 1

What’s going on…

Last week was family vacation on the Outer Banks! We’ve been going down there every summer in July since I was about 7 years old.  However, while my family has been, the hubs and I have not gone down for the week in many years.  For lots of reasons, I needed some distance from where I spent my childhood summers. Memories can be good, but sometimes they are overwhelming and you need some time between you and them.

This year, we packed up and left the Sassy Cat Crew for 7 days!  I HATE going away and leaving them – I don’t do it often, but I left them in the very loving and capable hands of our fabulous kitty baby-sitter.

As far as a week on the beach – well, not so much. It rained – and rained – and rained. The weather was pretty sucky to be honest. But we managed to pack in some fun things to fill our days.  My whole family went to an Escape Room for some rainy day fun. I’d never done one of these before and it was so much fun!  We didn’t make it out, but we were SUPER close – another minute (literally) and we’d have had it.

The hubby and I also ventured down to the Rum Distillery in Manteo. Now that was a fun way to spend two hours!  We took a tour and tasted some great rum. Of course, we brought some home.

Instead of sitting on the beach (which I really missed) we ate and shopped, which was fun too!  A shop that sells loads of wonderful goodies made by local artist was the best find. The store is called Absolutely Outer Banks and I seriously suggest you pop in if you find yourself in the OBX.  I was hunting for kitchy things to decorate my new bathroom with and lucked out completely.  Specifically, I wanted a mirror for the vanity. Sadly, I didn’t find one to bring home, however the lady that owns the shop got in touch with two of her artists and I’m having one made just for me!! I’m super excited about it.  It’s going to be a distressed white wood frame covered in aqua and white beach glass. I can’t wait to get it in a few weeks.

As far as the food scene, we had a good week on that front as well.  We’ve always liked a place called Goombay’s and this year was no different.  They make a killer mixed drink called a Goombay Smash and they even give you the recipe! I also had a great garlic shrimp dinner. But the best find of the week was new to us this year. Colington Cafe’ was by far the best meal I’ve had in a while. One of my long time favorites is Filet Oscar and I was in heaven having this last Friday.  They also have an in-house pastry chef and OMG she was amazing!

Unfortunately, when we came home the fun came to an abrupt halt. I was so happy to see the kitties, however we ran into a snag. Our refrigerator decided it had put in enough time and it retired. So the day after coming home from a week away was spent trying to find a new one.  Luckily, we decided pretty quickly and the new one is in and all re-stocked.

So that was my week!  What have you all been up to?
